While conference submissions and presentations are mentioned in GPP3, they are not covered in detail. With greater scrutiny being given to all aspects of scientific communication, the time was overdue for a set of standards and expectations, and some agreement on the general principles that should guide the creation of materials, while recognizing the unique time pressures and other constrictions inherent in preparing, submitting and then presenting material at conferences. This ISMPP U is based on the GPCAP article, and three of the authors will present an overview and some in-depth facets of this work.

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the underlying principles that should apply to abstract preparation and submission

  • Understand the roles of abstract authors and presenters, and the nuances of why these may be different compared with manuscript authors

  • Understand the place of oral and poster presentations in the scientific record

  • Recognize the different stakeholders in the scientific conference landscape
