Medical Publishing Insights and Practices Initiative (MPIP)

The Medical Publishing Insights and Practices (MPIP) initiative was founded in 2008 by members of the pharmaceutical industry and ISMPP. MPIP’s vision is to develop a culture of mutual respect, understanding, and trust between journals and pharma that will support more transparent and effective dissemination of results from industry-sponsored trials. To achieve this vision, MPIP’s goals are to:

  • Understand issues and challenges in publishing industry-sponsored research

  • Identify potential solutions to increase transparency and trust

  • Promote more effective partnership between sponsors and journals to raise standards in medical publishing and expand access to research results

Since its inception, MPIP has focused on creating tangible outputs that will benefit the publication community. Outputs resulting from collaboration between journal editors and MPIP co-sponsors include the Authors’ Submission Toolkit A Practical Guide to Getting Your Research Published (Curr Med Res Opin. 2010; 26(8): 1967-1982), as well as the Ten Recommendations for Closing the Credibility Gap in Reporting Industry-Sponsored Clinical Research: A Joint Journal and Pharmaceutical Industry Perspective (Mayo Clinic Proc. 2012; 87(5): 424-429). BMC Medicine has published the Medical Publishing Insights and Practices Initiative (MPIP) manuscript entitled “Five-step Authorship Framework” to improve transparency in disclosing contributors to industry-sponsored trial publications.

The key recommendations of the Framework include:

  • Identifying a representative group to establish authorship criteria early in the trial
  • Reaching consensus among all trial contributors concerning these criteria
  • Documenting trial contributions
  • Objectively determining who should be invited to participate in the manuscript development process
  • Ensuring authors meet all authorship criteria
